Ingredients
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/3 cup whole milk
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with the milk, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth.
Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until fully incorporated and smooth.
Stir in the vanilla extract.
For a glaze: use immediately while warm, pouring over cooled cake or pastries. For a frosting: let cool to room temperature, then beat with a mixer until thickened and spreadable.
Tips
For a thinner glaze, add more milk 1 tablespoon at a time.
Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week; bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
