Ingredients
2 tablespoons caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling
1 tablespoon vanilla syrup
1 cup milk
2 shots (2 ounces) espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
ice cubes (optional, for iced version)
Instructions
Make the caramel sauce if not using store-bought: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup sugar until amber, then stir in 1/4 cup heavy cream and 2 tablespoons butter. Set aside to cool.
Pour the vanilla syrup into a serving glass or mug.
For a hot macchiato: Steam the milk until hot and frothy, then pour it over the vanilla syrup, holding back the foam with a spoon. Top with foam.
For an iced macchiato: Fill a glass with ice, pour in the milk, then slowly pour the espresso over the back of a spoon to create layers.
Gently drizzle caramel sauce over the top. Serve immediately.
Tips
Use whole milk for a creamier texture.
To make vanilla syrup: combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water with 1 tablespoon vanilla extract; simmer until sugar dissolves.
Adjust sweetness by adding more or less vanilla syrup.
