Ingredients
1 cup warm milk (110°F)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg, room temperature
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon milk for brushing
1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl or stand mixer, whisk together remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, and yeast mixture. Add 2 cups flour and salt; mix until smooth. Gradually add remaining flour, kneading until a soft dough forms (about 8 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with a dough hook).
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush buns with milk and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
Tips
For extra softness, replace milk with water and add 2 tablespoons of powdered milk.
