Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough, divide in half for loaves or shape into rolls. Place in greased loaf pans or on a baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375°F.
- Bake loaves for 25-30 minutes or rolls for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.
Tips
- For a crustier crust, place a pan of hot water on the bottom oven rack during baking.
- Store cooled bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
