Ingredients
2 slices white bread (or brioche)
2 slices ham (about 2 oz total)
2 slices Swiss cheese (about 2 oz total)
1 large egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 pinch salt
1 pinch black pepper
1 tablespoon butter (for frying)
Instructions
Place one slice of bread on a work surface. Layer with 1 slice of Swiss cheese, then the ham, then the remaining slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the second slice of bread.
In a shallow bowl, whisk together egg, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined.
Heat butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat until melted and sizzling.
Carefully dip both sides of the sandwich into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off.
Place the sandwich in the hot skillet and cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula.
Remove from skillet, let rest for 1 minute, then slice diagonally and serve immediately.
Tips
For a sweeter version, use brioche bread and dust with powdered sugar after frying.
Serve with raspberry jam or maple syrup for dipping.
To make ahead, assemble sandwich without dipping in egg; refrigerate until ready to cook.
