Ingredients
12 oz (340 g) dried pasta (penne, ziti, or rigatoni)
2 tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (28 oz / 800 g) crushed tomatoes
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
Salt and black pepper to taste
2 cups (8 oz / 225 g) shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup (50 g) grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup (60 g) breadcrumbs
2 tbsp butter, melted
Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Combine the cooked pasta with the tomato sauce. Transfer half of the pasta mixture to the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with half of the mozzarella and Parmesan. Repeat with remaining pasta and cheeses.
In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter. Sprinkle evenly over the top.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
Tips
For a richer flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes with the garlic.
Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat in the oven or microwave.
