Ingredients
1 loaf (about 16 oz) brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch thick slices, then into sticks
6 large eggs
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Optional: maple syrup and fresh berries for serving
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
Arrange the bread sticks in the prepared dish in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed.
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread sticks, pressing down gently to ensure all pieces are soaked. Let sit for 10 minutes, turning once halfway.
Drizzle melted butter over the top and sprinkle with brown sugar.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean).
Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries if desired.
Tips
For extra crispiness, broil for 1-2 minutes after baking, watching closely.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
You can prepare the casserole the night before: assemble, cover, and refrigerate overnight; bake as directed in the morning.
