Flaky, buttery Danish pastries filled with a spiced apple compote and drizzled with a simple glaze. This recipe uses store-bought puff pastry for ease, making it perfect for a special breakfast or brunch.
2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced small
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1-2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft and liquid has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out puff pastry sheet to a 12x12 inch square. Cut into 4 equal squares, then cut each square diagonally to make 8 triangles.
Place a spoonful of apple mixture near the wide end of each triangle. Fold the wide end over the filling and roll towards the tip, shaping into a crescent. Place on prepared baking sheet, tip tucked under. Curve ends slightly to form a crescent shape.
Brush each pastry with beaten egg. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and puffed. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled pastries. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Tips
For extra flavor, add 2 tablespoons of raisins or chopped walnuts to the apple filling.
Store leftover pastries in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes.
The apple filling can be made a day ahead and refrigerated.
