Ingredients
4 cups fresh breadcrumbs (from about 6 slices white bread)
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium, such as Granny Smith or Fuji)
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
In a medium bowl, combine fresh breadcrumbs with melted butter; toss until evenly coated.
In a large bowl, toss apple slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and water.
Spread one-third of the buttered breadcrumbs evenly in the prepared dish. Top with half of the apple mixture. Repeat layers: another third of breadcrumbs, remaining apples, and finish with remaining breadcrumbs.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until top is golden and apples are tender.
Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Tips
For best texture, use fresh breadcrumbs from day-old bread; avoid pre-packaged dry crumbs.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven until warm.
